Recovery after a cesarean section – what happens in the body?

A cesarean section is a common method of delivery, but it is also a major abdominal surgery. During a cesarean section, a surgical incision is made through the abdominal wall and the uterus so that the baby can be born. Afterwards, the body needs to recover both from the pregnancy and from the surgery itself.

Recovery after a cesarean section looks different for everyone. Many experience soreness around the surgical wound, tension in the abdomen, and a body that feels weaker during the first few weeks. Movements such as standing up, coughing, laughing, or carrying things can feel more strenuous in the beginning while the abdomen is still healing.

Even though the baby is born by cesarean section, the body goes through the same postpartum period as after a vaginal delivery. The uterus contracts, hormone levels change, and the body begins to recover from pregnancy. Most people also experience lochia – postpartum bleeding – even after a cesarean section.

The body after a cesarean section

During the first few weeks after a cesarean section, the body needs time and recovery. The surgical wound needs to heal at the same time as the abdomen and core muscles gradually begin to regain their strength.

Common experiences after a cesarean section can include:

  • soreness or sensitivity around the incision
  • tension in the abdomen
  • fatigue and a need for more rest
  • postpartum bleeding (lochia)
  • difficulty finding comfortable positions when resting or breastfeeding

When the abdomen and the area around the scar are sensitive, it can be nice to wear clothing that does not press against the surgical incision. Many therefore appreciate soft postpartum panties with a high waist that fit comfortably over the abdomen without chafing against the cesarean scar.

How long does recovery after a cesarean section take?

How long recovery after a cesarean section takes varies from person to person. For many, it takes several weeks before the body feels more stable again, and the healing of the surgical wound continues over a longer period.

During the first time after a cesarean section, it can be helpful to:

  • take it easy and avoid heavy lifting
  • give the body time to heal
  • use soft and comfortable clothing
  • find positions that relieve pressure on the abdomen

Some also find that cold can feel soothing when the area around the abdomen feels sore or tense. A cooling product, such as an ice pack, can be used on top of clothing or fabric for a cooling sensation when the body needs extra comfort during recovery after a cesarean section.

Postpartum after a cesarean section

The postpartum period is about the body's recovery after pregnancy and childbirth, regardless of how the baby is born. After a cesarean section, the body needs both time and care as the surgical wound heals and the body gradually regains its strength.

Many find that small, practical aids can make everyday life easier during the first period. Comfortable postpartum panties that do not chafe against the scar, products that help with postpartum bleeding, and cooling products that provide a soothing sensation can contribute to increased comfort during recovery.

Having well-thought-out products at home can make the first time after a cesarean section more comfortable and provide better conditions to focus on rest, healing, and time together with the new family member.
