Perineal massage – how to do it

Reduce the risk of tearing during childbirth with perineal massage
A common concern among many expectant mothers is tearing during childbirth. To reduce the risk, you can regularly massage the perineum with oil. Performing perineal massage from pregnancy week 34 helps the skin around the vagina and perineum become more supple and elastic. The massage increases blood flow to the sensitive area, and our perineal massage oil softens the skin and strengthens it with beneficial and nourishing vitamins.
Massaging the perineum with oil during pregnancy is a way to help soften the area and to mentally prepare the woman for what is to come. Many women feel that the massage helps them understand how elastic the vagina and perineum actually are, which eases some of the anxiety before childbirth. We recommend applying the oil daily from week 34 to reduce the risk of tears and lacerations during delivery.
What is perineal massage?
Perineal massage, also called perineum massage, is when you massage the perineum, the skin around the vaginal opening, about 4–6 weeks before birth to soften the area.
How do you perform perineal massage?
Clean hands and short nails are a good starting point when doing perineal massage. This is of course to prevent introducing dirt into the vagina and to avoid scratching yourself.
Use a good pregnancy-safe oil that moisturizes
Place a pillow or something similar under your buttocks so you’re lying comfortably and can easily reach the perineum
Use your thumbs to gently massage up and down and in a U-shaped motion
Tip! Some find it easier to do perineal massage in front of a mirror so they can see what they’re doing.
